Shovels & Rope is a wonderful album by two Charleston locals, Cary Ann Hearst and Michael Trent. The married couple started out individually, both writing/creating songs of their own. In the end, they decided to collaborate and have been a huge success.
I was lucky enough to experience numerous live performances by Trent when I was an assistant manager of a local coffee shop, Kudu Coffee. The cafe featured different live artists on the weekends, and after Trent’s first performance was one of Kudu’s biggest turnouts at the time, they invited him back for more.
Now that the word is out and the album got great ratings (check out this article at Billboard.com, and while you’re at it this one about their No. 3 ranking in American Songwriter‘s Top 50 Albums of 2012 list), they have been asked to appear on David Letterman.
The Charleston City Paper has the details in their article.
This is just another awesome story about Charleston and the local talent that comes from this wonderful city. One of my favorite bands, Jump Little Children, started out here.. and we can’t forget Band of Horses or Darius Rucker.
